Ryan Day updates where the Ohio State quarterback battle stands following spring game

This spring gave Ohio State a jumpstart to finding out who their quarterback will be for the 2024 season.

Following yesterday’s spring game, the two front runners appear to be Kansas State transfer Will Howard and the longest member of the room Devin Brown.

Ohio State played its annual spring game on Saturday and the Scarlet offense defeated the Grey team, 34-33. Following the game, head coach Ryan Day opened up about the quarterback completion and where it stands.

“I wouldn't say that I'm going to make any declarations right now,” Day said after the spring game. “But we'll look at the film and see what it looks like and then decide where to go from there,” Day said. “But I don't have much to say about it right now.”

Each one of Howard and Brown was given a pair of drives in the first half before turning it over to the rest of the room. Overall, Brown had the best day completing 5-of-7 passes for 66 yards and a touchdown to walk-on wideout Brennen Schramm from 11 yards out. Howard was 9-for-13 passing for 77 yards in the spring game.

“I think that over the spring, the timing is increasing, it's getting better over and over again. I think the more reps that all these guys get the better. He had some nice completions in there,” Day said of Howard. “And I think there was a sack in there, maybe he held onto it a little too long. And the wind was going pretty hard today, so I think we underthrew a couple of balls. But overall, I thought he had at least had a good comfort level for the first drive in the Shoe.”

Highly touted freshman Julian Sayin, Air Noland, and Lincoln Kienholz all took snaps with backups in the second half of the game. Sayin has caused quite the buzz this off-season and Day has even said he was in the mix to be the starter, but he had a day to forget that included an i re-election in the spring game. With Howard and Brown playing with mainly starters and the others not, it’s clear they’re in the driver’s seat for the job.

The transfer window will open on April 16 and run through April 30. It is possible that the Buckeyes could lose a quarterback during that window.
