Dolphins backup QB placed in concussion protocol after staff finds 'irregularities' during game

Miami Dolphins backup quarterback Mike White has been placed in the concussion protocol and there is no timetable for his return, according to head coach Mike McDaniel.

The second-year leader in South Beach added that White and third-stringer Skylar Thompson were expected to split playing time in the team's preseason finale on Saturday against the Jacksonville Jaguars, but the former has already been ruled out for the contest.

Thompson led the Dolphins in their 28-3 win over the Houston Texans on Saturday, finishing 15-for-22 with 157 passing yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions for a 128.2 quarterback rating, while starter Tua Tagovailoa went 5-for-7 with 61 passing yards, and no touchdowns and one interception for a 58.3 quarterback rating.

White had no passing attempts and absorbed one sack for an 11-yard loss.

The 28-year-old spent the last two seasons with the New York Jets, playing in the first eight games of his NFL career and making seven starts. White posted a 58.9% completion percentage with 1,192 passing yards, three touchdowns and four interceptions and a 75.7 quarterback rating in four contests (all starts) during the 2022 campaign.

He signed a two-year deal with Miami in mid-March.

Tagovailoa registered career highs in passing yards (3,548), passing touchdowns (25), yards gained per pass attempt (league-leading 8.9) and quarterback rating (league-leading 105.5) in 2022. One of the biggest stories of the NFL campaign was his multiple concussions, however, which forced him to miss four full games and parts of two others.
